Course Syllabus: American Government and Civics

Course Overview:

In this American Government and Civics class, we will explore the fundamental principles, institutions, and processes that shape the United States government and its relationship with its citizens. Through engaging discussions, readings, and activities, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of the American political system and promote active citizenship.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the structure and functions of the federal, state, and local governments.
  2. Analyze the principles of the United States Constitution and their impact on the American political system.
  3. Examine the roles and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society.
  4. Evaluate the role of political parties, elections, and public opinion in shaping government policies.
  5. Investigate contemporary political issues and their implications for American society.

Assessment and Grading:

  1. Formative Grades: There will be a minimum of one formative grade per week, which includes daily assignments and quizzes. Formative grades will account for 60% of the student’s total grade.
  2. Summative Grades: Unit tests and projects will be considered summative assessments and will make up 40% of the total grade. A study guide and class review will be provided before each unit test to aid in preparation.
  3. Absences and Make-up Work: If a student is absent and misses a test or any other graded assignment, it is their responsibility to communicate with the teacher and make arrangements to make up the missing test or assignment.

Additional Information:

  • Re-takes for failing test grades are not permitted, so it is essential to be prepared and seek help when needed.
  • Active participation and engagement in class discussions and activities will be encouraged and positively considered in the overall assessment.
