Course Description:  Geometry: Concepts and Connections (27.08210) is the second course in a sequence of three high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. This course is intended to enhance students’ geometric, algebraic, graphical, and probabilistic reasoning skills. Students will apply their algebraic and geometric reasoning skills to make sense of problems involving geometry, trigonometry, algebra, probability, and statistics. Students will continue to enhance their analytical geometry and reasoning skills when analyzing and applying a deep understanding of polynomial expressions, proofs, constructions, rigid motions and transformations, similarity, congruence, circles, right triangle trigonometry, geometric measurement, and conditional probability.

FormatThis class will be focused on students actively engaging in mathematics, explaining their thinking, justifying their work, using multiple representations, making connections, and using appropriate technology.  Students will have opportunities to work individually, in pairs, and in groups.

Grading Policy:  One credit is earned at the end of the course/semester.

Formative Assessments (Classwork, homework/skills checks, quizzes*): 60%

Summative Assessments (Tests, Projects):  40%

* Note: quizzes count as 5 class/homework grades

Formative and summative assessments comprise 80-90% of a student's overall average.  The final exam will be worth the other 10-20%.

Classroom Expectations:

  • All school rules must be followed and will be enforced. School policies are outlined in the Student Handbook.
  • Students are expected to be prepared for class each day with all materials including their Chromebook, which should be charged and ready to go.
  • Be respectful at all times – respect yourself, the teacher, and your peers. Maintain healthy boundaries with regard to personal space and personal property.
  • Exiting the classroom for any reason during active instruction is not appropriate and is heavily discouraged as it causes disruptions in the learning of others as well as potential safety issues. Restroom, nurse, and other passes will only be allowed during work sessions at the teacher’s discretion.  Excessive requests to leave the room will result in a call home and possible disciplinary referrals.

Class Requirements:  Each student should have the following supplies:

  • 1-1.5 inch hardcover 3 ring binder for notes, assignments, and returned work
  • Mechanical pencils and erasers
  • Notebook paper
  • Calculator for home use (We have calculators in the classroom for use at school.)
    • Texas Instruments TI-84 graphing calculator is preferred for students who will be taking the SAT and/or are college bound. These can be bought used on amazon.com or ebay.com.
    • Texas Instruments TI-30xs multiview scientific calculator is sufficient for coursework.

Assignments:  Assignments consist of both daily homework and skills checks given in class. Homework will be given on a regular basis and may or may not be graded for completion and/or accuracy.  All homework must be 100% complete and ALL work must be shown to receive initial credit for the assignment, although replacement and/or recovery will be available once mastery is shown.  Skills checks come directly from material covered in class and/or homework and will be graded for accuracy.  Two attempts will be given, and the highest score will be the grade.  If the homework was 100% complete, students will receive ½ credit back for points missed on the skills check.

Assessments:  Tests will be announced at least one week in advance and will be posted in the calendar of Canvas.  Quizzes will be given frequently to assess student progress throughout the semester.  Absence on the day prior to an assessment does not excuse the student from taking the assessment as scheduled.  If absent on the day of an assessment, the student will take it 1-2 days after he/she returns (exceptions MAY be considered for extended absences). Any assessment not made up within the allotted time frame will receive a grade of zero.

Late Work: Since math is a subject that constantly builds, timely completion of assigned work is necessary for a student to feel confident moving forward.  Therefore, late work is not an acceptable practice, and no late work will be accepted for a grade unless a student was absent when it was assigned.  If a student is absent when homework is checked, it is due the day they return.  Teachers reserve the right to adjust policy on a case-by-case basis.

Make-Up PolicyIt is the student’s responsibility to make up work missed when absent. You should check itsLearning for any notes, resources, and assignments missed.  Additionally, you should clarify due dates with your teacher.  Teachers will follow the PCSD policy for late work as outlined in the Student-Parent Handbook.  Teachers reserve the right to adjust policy on a case-by-case basis.

Tutoring:  I am available for tutoring every morning from 7:15 – 7:40.  Students should request a morning hall pass the day prior to attending a morning tutoring session.  Afternoon sessions are provided on a schoolwide basis, and students should check the after-school math tutoring schedule in their teacher’s classroom.  Students are expected to be prepared for each tutoring session by having their notebooks and specific problems/questions to address.  Please note that these times are subject to change due to scheduled meetings or duty assignments.
